About midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Paso Robles occupies the rolling hills of California's central coast. Originally a rest stop for travelers along El Camino Real, the settlement initially was known for the mineral hot springs in the surrounding area. In the 18th century Franciscan priests built the first mineral baths. The Paso Robles Inn, which opened in 1891, featured a hot springs plunge bath, which was used by world-renowned concert pianist and composer Ignace Paderewski in 1913 for treatment of his arthritis; other dignitaries staying at the inn have included Theodore Roosevelt and Clark Gable.
